Vespa Elettrica intro

Vespa introduced the production version of its Elettrica scooter at EICMA (photos: Piaggio Group)

EICMA kinda snuck up on me this year. Piaggio Group had a bunch of product intros, but the one of greatest interest to you, dear reader, is most likely the production version of the Vespa Elettrica scooter.

You’ll recall a concept mockup was featured last year. This one has an actual electric motor.

According to Piaggio Group’s rather badly translated press release, the Vespa Elettrica claims 4 kW (5.4 hp) and a range of 100 km (62.5 miles) on a full charge, which Piaggio says will only take 20 minutes. There’s an app for it: a special version of the Vespa Multimedia Platform turns your smartphone into a digital instrument display, among other things. Aside from saying it goes on sale in 2018, no specifics were offered regarding availability in North America. Nor was a price announced.

Other scooter announcements included the addition of a 350 to the Piaggio MP3 range (presumably powered by the same engine as the BV 350), and a host of upgrades to the Primavera.

The lesser smallframe now rolls on 12-inch wheels, and features LED lighting, plus new colors. Oh, there’s now an S version. Which would seem to make the Sprint redundant, since both are powered by the same engine. But whatever.

More EICMA news as it happens.
