You’ve probably heard by now…

The announcement came at Saturday’s awards banquet: Amerivespa 2018 will be held in Richmond, Va. on Father’s Day weekend, June 14-17, 2018. Among other things, Richmond is home to Moto Richmond, one of the best scooter/motorcycle dealers in the universe. Richmond is a hip, happening place that has had scooters on its streets for many years. And it’s not far from Washington, D.C. Should be fun!

Seattle will host its second consecutive national scooter rally in 2018. Lambretta Jamboree, aka Lammy Jammy, will be headquartered at McMenamins Anderson School in Bothell, Wash., just 13 miles northeast of Seattle. McMenamins is famous in the PNW for its pubs, hotels and movie theaters, all of which are housed in repurposed, historic buildings. The Anderson School opened in 2015 in Bothell’s first junior high school, and anchors a downtown revitalization.

It seems like everyone I know is getting or has gotten a Lambretta. Ducks is doing a rebuild of one for a friend who found it in a barn (and who is writing the checks for the parts and services). In fact, she’s organized a posse of 50-y/o women who ride Lammys. They will be making the scene in Bothell, for sure.

Look for info and updates at Lambretta Club USA’s website.

Cali and Tijuana

Tijuana’s on the right…

If you thought about going to ENVESPAMX but Mexico City was too far afield for you, in 2018 you’re in luck! Next year’s edition of Mexico’s biggest scooter rally will be held in Tijuana.

When I was in high school I passed through TJ on the way to a fishing trip in Ensenada. Back then it was pretty sketchy. Not any more. Tijuana is now almost a suburb of San Diego (lots of people commute across the border!). If you’re watching TV in San Diego, three of the local stations are in Tijuana… one is a CW affiliate and broadcasts in English.

As you can see in above photo, Tijuana bears no resemblance whatsoever to a Speedy Gonzales cartoon. Aside from everyone around you speaking Spanish, it doesn’t look or feel much different from any place in the U.S. As I write this, one Mexican peso is worth about 5 cents U.S., which is down considerably from where it was before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. If you live on the West Coast, Tijuana is a pretty easy drive on I-5. And you only need a passport card or enhanced driver’s license to cross the border on land. Nelly wants me to go with her, and I just might.

VWD handoff ceremony

A few days ago, the organizers of Vespa World Days in Celle, Germany (which saw over 4000 scooters!) officially handed the torch (so to speak) to the organizers of 2018’s edition in… wait for it… Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Don’t worry, the Troubles are over, and have been for quite a while. Seems everybody had forgotten what the original beef was, anyway. Like Richmond, Belfast these days has a thriving arts and nightlife scene. A century ago, it was a shipbuilding center (the Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard, and there’s now a Titanic Museum). Oh, you drive or ride on the left. There are lots of signs on highways to remind you.

It’s time to start making your travel plans.
