Vespa GTS now comes with Piaggio’s new iGet 125/150 engine (Piaggio Group photos)

Fall means motorcycle show season in Europe, and on the occasion of the opening of Intermot in Cologne, Germany Piaggio Group made several product announcements.

Of greatest interest to readers of this here blog is the announcement that Vespa’s GTS will now be available with Piaggio Group’s new iGet 125/150 engine. Though not planned for U.S. sale (unless, possibly, gas hits $9/gallon), the big Vespa is available in most markets in Europe and Asia with the smaller engines, mainly for price and statutory reasons.

The iGet engine is expected to make its North American debut in the 2017 Piaggio Liberty, which was supposed to have arrived at dealers by now. The iGet (which stands for Green Technology Experience) claims improved fuel economy and reduced emissions (it meets Euro 4) over its predecessor, and will eventually find its way into all Piaggio Group scooters.

Aprilia Tuono 125

The smashing success of Honda’s 125cc Grom has every other motorcycle manufacturer scrambling to be in that segment; Piaggio’s entry is the Aprilia Tuono 125. It boasts an aluminum frame and styling inspired by the Tuono V4. When it will arrive at U.S. dealers (In case you were wondering if Aprilia still has U.S. dealers, they do. Click right here to find one near you.) is anyone’s guess.
