Cannonballin’ 2016

Early arrivals

Early arrivals at Lighthouse Park in Mukilteo, Wash., the finish line for the 2016 Scooter Cannonball (Orin O’Neill photos)

The bi-annual Scooter Cannonball rolled into Mukilteo, Wash. Friday, having started 11 days earlier in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Sunshine and blue skies were the order of the day at Mukilteo’s Lighthouse Park. Pix and words follow the jump.

Thirty-four scooters were classified, and most of them made it to Mukilteo.

Piaggio MP3s

Of course I’ve thought about doing this, and have given much thought to what bike I’d do it with. While lots of folks consider a Honda Helix the hot setup, I gravitate toward the Piaggio MP3. Our friend Chuck did a 2400-mile road trip on his a few years ago, and MP3 250s (like the ones pictured) are dirt cheap on Craigslist. What I like best about the MP3 is that it’s impervious to crosswinds and bow waves from 18-wheelers. A tripod is very stable, after all.

Gonzo, from New Orleans

Gonzo from New Orleans had a very eventful trip. He worked his way through numerous mechanical issues, at one point doing a total engine rebuild in a motel parking lot. Persistence paid off — he got the bike running again and it rolled into Mukilteo under its own power.

Sloppy Joe is a Vespa P200E

“Sloppy Joe” is a 1979 Vespa P200E that was a $700 Craigslist find. Preparation for the 3300-mile cross-country trip consisted of a new front shock absorber.

Seattle’s Soldiers of Destiny SC made up a large contingent that did the ride to raise funds and awareness for the Moyer Foundation, a Seattle-based charitable organization founded by former Mariners pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen.

SODs arrive in Mukilteo

The SODs were accompanied by several Seattle scooterists who met up with them in Wenatchee, Wash. and points west. If you weren’t able to ride with them, no worries… they were accompanied by a film crew, and will soon release a documentary about the ride.

Post-ride hug

As you can imagine, there were lots of post-ride hugs and high fives.

The next Scooter Cannonball is slated for 2018, and it seems likely will run west-to-east. The exact route is yet to be determined.
