Amerivespa 2016: And so it begins… *updated

Bikes on Beale St, Memphis

Memphis’ Bikes on Beale became Scooters on Beale for Amerivespa (Jaylin Billig photos)

Jaylin hit the road early Thursday, arriving in Memphis just as Amerivespa kicked into high gear. Her report follows the jump.

By the time I arrived, there had already been four rides: The Music City Ride included several places with a connection to Elvis Presley; the History City also included a connection to Elvis (the crypt at Forest Hill Cemetery); and finally, there were two long rides, one in Northeastern Shelby County, and one along the Mississippi River.

Like San Antonio a few years ago, Memphis was hot. No, it was HOT. The National Weather service issued a heat warning for Memphis and the surrounding area in Mississippi and Arkansas. Today’s heat index peaked at 106°F (41°C).

The meet & greet was held at Memphis Made Brewing Co. They were saying somewhere between 560 and 580 have registered.

Representin' Vespa Club of Canada

Not only Canada was represented; a group of people from Mexico rode from there to Memphis (!).

More scooters on Beale

Wednesday nights are Bike Night on Beale, but tonight was Scooter Night on Beale, a special event just for Amerivespa.

Custom Ruckus

Big Vespa sculpture

Even though it’s called Amerivespa, all scooters are welcome. You’ll see Lambrettas, vintage European scooters and Honda Ruckuses. Especially customized ones like the one above.

You’ll see all kinds of other scooter-related stuff, too. The gigantic Vespa sculpture (right), for instance.

It was created by artist William Snyder III in 2014, and it’s one of two (the other one is in Mankato, Minn. at the moment). It stands 16 feet tall, and is rather well-traveled. In fact, you can have it brought to your event! Details and the story behind it can be found at

*Whew!* Busy day today. I’m going on the ride to Graceland tomorrow. —Jaylin Billig

Scootin’ Old Skool will have more Amerivespa 2016 updates from Jaylin. Stay tuned!
