Now hangin’ in the ‘Ham

Bellingham's 1892 city hall

No, the old city hall was not designed by Ludwig the Mad...

I’ve moved again. But this one was planned.

And I’m hoping I’ll be sticking around in Bellingham, Wash. Which, BTW, is pronounced BELL-LING-HAM. No need to drop letters or even syllables, it not being located in Britain.

Why Bellingham? First and foremost, economics—it’s a cheaper place to live than Portland, and especially Seattle. It’s on Puget Sound (aka the Salish Sea), it’s near Canada and it’s a college town, being home to Western Washington University.

Don’t get me wrong, Portland is a great place. A place I liked, and grew to love after spending almost a year. I would go so far as to say, if you’ve had this idea about living in Paris for six months or a year, move to Portland instead—not only is it a much cheaper place to live, it’s a much more interesting place. But make sure you bring enough money to live, because the place doesn’t have much more of an economy than Bellingham. Portland is still, after all, the Coolest Place in the World to Be Unemployed™.

Bellingham is a scooter town, in scale and in fact. The late, lamented Chispa sold a lot of scoots, and they’re still running around. There’s a healthy club scene, populated by folks who like to ride. And bowl.

Sounds like a good move to a good place – lots of scooters and places to ride.

I discovered your blog just in time to learn about your surgery. This move sounds like an outward and visible sign of the spiral of your life moving upward/forward/in a positive direction. May it be so.

Thanks for your offerings. It makes my day to find a notification in my inbox that another edition of Scootin’ Old Skool is waiting for me.

    Good luck and again thanks!
