In a New York state of mind

Well-used Vespa in NYC

Seen in New York's Hell's Kitchen (Harold Hollingsworth photo)

My friend Harold, owner of that sweet red & white Lambretta, was in New York City recently. Along with the usual Big Apple sights, he encountered this Vespa in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, which these days is pretty well gentrified. Okay, maybe not completely so, judging by the chain lock.

I’ve always wanted to ride my scooter in NYC, and have long thought a great birthday present to myself would be attending the New York Scooter Club’s annual Scooter Block Party, which usually happens the weekend of my birthday. This year? It’s a ways off, we’ll see.

Once again, I will have to miss Vegas, which happens February 25-29, 2010. Hitting a huge jackpot in one of the casinos would sure solve all my problems. 😉

At least Spring Scoot is local now. Favicon

Not only are most scoots guarded with heavy chain locks in NY, but most have their license plates removed for safe-keeping as well … not to mention that no plate makes ticketing very difficult for meter-enforcement personnel.

Scooting in NYC is probably not a lot more hazardous than Seattle, or San Francisco. Simply a bigger city with a greater possibility of getting lost.

Chuck, friends on the NY Scooter Club forum say the taking-the-license-plate-with-you trick no longer works. Apparently the city realized the state law considers a scoot (or any vehicle) without a plate abandoned, so the Traffic Department can just impound it. Way more money for the city than a parking ticket.

It’s funny that one of Kryptonite’s most secure chain lock is called the “New York Fahgettaboudit®”…

Well used, Hell’s Kitchen was still a bit rough in the spots I was in, and this economy doesn’t help any, again, glad to see my picture used on your blog Orin!

Harold, thanks for letting me use it! I’ll bet you’re glad you got outta there when you did… NYC is getting a snowstorm like we had in Seattle & Portland last winter!
