On the video-video-video

If you weren’t able to go on Ralph’s Fall Foliage & Farmland ride, you can see what it was like:

Stubbie has created a YouTube video channel with more clips from this ride (and more video to come); you can find a link to it in the blogroll under “Multimedia” which was formerly known as “Podcasts.”

Stubbie shot the clips with a Flip video camera. You may have seen this at Target and other retailers; the Ultra is about the size of an older iPod and typically sells for $149. Flip recently introduced the Mino and Mino HD, the latter shooting in 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. Flip’s cameras plug directly into your Windows or Mac OS computer with no software to install, and let you upload directly to YouTube, MySpace or AOL. They also offer mounting brackets and other accessories.

Another interesting video solution is offered by GoPro. Their cameras are wearable and waterproof, and come in standard and wide-angle versions. They shoot in 512 x 384-pixel resolution (most of the photos on this blog are 500 pixels wide), which gives you almost an hour on a 2GB SD card. You could attach one of these to your helmet, or your wrist; GoPro offers a variety of attachment options.

bobskoot, he of Wet Coast Scootin fame, shoots video with a Panasonic SD camcorder similar to this one. You can see an example of the video quality here. Camcorders like this often offer features like image stabilization and the ability to plug in an external mic (which you can cover with a foam accessory to eliminate wind noise). And most SD camcorders are quite resistant to being banged around, as they would be if mounted on a scooter or motorcycle.

I’d like to do some video myself, but I’m not in a hurry. The equipment gets cheaper and more capable every day…

The forests remind me of my pre-scooter days in Monterey-Carmel-Big Sur. As much as I enjoyed exloring those places in an F150, it really makes me wonder how great it would be on the Scooter.

Nice video – thanks for putting this up. I am beginning to wonder when we will have weather that nice again…it’s flooding in the Snoqualmie Valley!

A point I forgot to make: a camera like the Panasonic produces video you can edit with something like iMovie or favorite flavor of Final Cut…
